I first encountered Bitcoin in 2016 by chance, hearing about it from a friend who was "mining" it at the time. It took me months, no, years! to truly grasp the scope of this peaceful revolution. Initially, especially for us in the "first world," we tend to focus on the speculative aspect of this protocol, but Bitcoin is much, much more. And it's for all the reasons I'm writing below that La Gualda Vecchia accepts Bitcoin payments.
We see Bitcoin as a beacon of hope, a promise of a future where financial services are accessible to everyone. We proudly join the ranks of businesses embracing this revolutionary technology (thanks to BPAY) as a tool for empowerment and progress.
And below I'll try to explain why.
The true potential of Bitcoin
The true potential of Bitcoin
Bitcoin is not just a digital currency; it represents a paradigm shift towards inclusivity and financial autonomy. Contrary to common (mis)conceptions, Bitcoin is not a way to evade taxes or facilitate illicit activities. Rather, it is a tool for freedom that empowers individuals worldwide to overcome traditional financial barriers and seize opportunities on their own terms.
Bitcoin's Promise: Democratizing Financial Services
In a world where millions lack access to basic financial services, Bitcoin offers a lifeline. Its decentralized nature and censorship resistance mean that anyone with an internet connection can participate in the global economy, regardless of their socioeconomic background. This democratization of finance has the potential to uplift communities and drive economic growth on a scale previously unimaginable.
The Environmental Perspective: Towards Sustainability
Bitcoin, once a source of concern for its perceived excessive energy consumption, may now emerge as a catalyst for a new era of economic and environmental sustainability.
In the oil industry, managing flared natural gas presents a significant challenge, with its often inefficient and environmentally damaging disposal. However, an innovative solution is on the horizon: Bitcoin mining could offer a way to transform this excess gas from a problem into a profitable resource. Companies like Upstream Data Inc. are already capitalizing on this opportunity, offering Bitcoin mining data centers powered entirely by natural gas, revolutionizing how the industry addresses its environmental and monetary dilemmas.
Marathon Digital Holdings has partnered with Nodal Power to launch an innovative pilot project mining bitcoin using exclusively energy derived from landfill methane, representing a significant step towards more sustainable mining technologies. This announcement follows the release of a report highlighting the potential of bitcoin mining to reduce methane emissions from landfills, thus addressing both environmental concerns and energy and economic inefficiencies. This innovative approach could prove to be a win-win solution in the context of current discussions on energy usage in data centers, offering a positive outlook for the environment and the energy infrastructure.
Examples of Bitcoin's Potential in Action
Gridless in Kenya is a brilliant example of how Bitcoin can transform the territory it integrates into. All over Africa, there is an immense demand for reliable, clean, and affordable energy, but mini-grid power generators struggle for economic sustainability. Gridless operates on hydroelectric power, becoming energy independent and financing microgrid transmission lines to expand to the homes of families who currently lack electricity access in their homes or area. It monetizes the entire capacity of their production thanks to mining activity that acts as a buyer of last resort. By leveraging Bitcoin's innovative capabilities, this type of enterprise not only provides financial services but also stimulates social and economic progress in their respective regions.
MOTIV, in Peru, is another incredibly interesting example. It uses Bitcoin and blockchain technologies to create circular micro-economies in impoverished and oppressed communities, radically transforming their future prospects. Motiv educates, equips, and then empowers individuals and communities to literally break free from the financial and other barriers that oppress them. MOTIV does this so they have the knowledge and tools to elevate themselves towards self-sufficiency and sustainable independence.
Bitcoin has also become a useful tool for activists and journalists in dictatorships, as it makes it much harder to trace funds. In Togo, a West African state ruled by a despotic family since 1967, it is used to send money to opposition and civil society leaders, despite bank accounts being frozen. Bitcoin has been instrumental in sending donations to Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation in Russia and to pro-democracy movements in Belarus and Myanmar.
Alex Gladstein, chief strategy officer at the Human Rights Foundation and author of a book arguing that Bitcoin offers freedom from archaic monetary systems and political conflicts, believes the cryptocurrency is particularly interesting for Africans, who suffer "all sorts of financial repression." He points out that there are 45 currencies on the continent - 15 of which are still controlled by France - with high transaction fees on conversion operations that are largely processed by Western companies with highly fluctuating rates. "Bitcoin represents an escape route and an alternative for Africans, and its use is less limited than some might think," he says. Entrepreneurs in that country have figured out how people without internet can use Bitcoin, which is frankly remarkable."Ian Birrel
